Sian Ka’an Biosphere Reserve

South of Tulum · Biosphere reserve, UNESCO site
Carretera Tulum-Punta Allen, northern entrance south of Tulum’s hotel zone, Q.R.
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: Sian Ka’an is a 528,000 hectare federal biosphere reserve inscribed by UNESCO in 1987 for its natural beauty and biodiversity. It spans tropical forest, mangroves, wetlands, about 120 km of coast and part of the Mesoamerican Reef, and is managed by CONANP.

Muyil and Chunyaxche Lagoons

Highway 307, Muyil · Lagoons and Maya channels
Carretera Federal 307, next to the Muyil archaeological zone, Q.R.
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: Near Muyil, the ancient Maya cut narrow channels linking the inland lagoons to the sea as coastal trade routes, and these channels are still navigable today. The lagoons sit beside the Muyil archaeological zone on the paved highway side of the reserve.

Boca Paila

Tulum-Punta Allen road · Coastal lagoon inlet
Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila, inside Sian Ka’an, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: Boca Paila is the coastal section of the reserve where the lagoon system connects with the Caribbean, along the unpaved road between Tulum and Punta Allen. The area is part of the road corridor included in the 2026 state rehabilitation works.

Ascension Bay (Bahía de la Ascensión)

Punta Allen · Marine bay and flats
Bahía de la Ascensión, Punta Allen, Sian Ka’an, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: Ascension Bay is a large shallow bay on the reserve’s coast known internationally for flats holding permit, bonefish, tarpon and snook year round. Several fishing lodges operate around Punta Allen and on Punta Pájaros island at its southern end.

Punta Allen Village and Waterfront

Punta Allen · Fishing village and beach
Javier Rojo Gómez (Punta Allen), Sian Ka’an, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: Punta Allen is a lobster fishing village at the end of the coastal road and the departure point for boat excursions into the reserve’s bay, lagoons and reef. Its fishing cooperative, Vigía Chico, has managed the local lobster fishery since 1982.

Laguna Kaan Luum

Highway 307, about 15 min south of Tulum (outside the reserve) · Lagoon with cenote
Carretera Federal 307, toward Felipe Carrillo Puerto, about 12 km from Tulum centro, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: Kaan Luum is a shallow turquoise lagoon with a deep cenote at its center, located just north of Sian Ka’an along the highway. Its shallow areas suit families, and a new on-site restaurant was opened to improve visitor services.

Parque del Jaguar

Tulum coast, about 20 min from the reserve · National park
Carretera Federal 307, Tulum, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: Parque del Jaguar is the national park on Tulum’s coast that contains the Tulum archaeological zone and the MURECO museum. Entry fees for the park apply in addition to the archaeological zone, while the museum itself is free.
