Sian Ka’an is one of Mexico’s largest protected areas and the single biggest natural asset south of Tulum. Its lagoons, channels, flats and reef can be explored by road, by boat from Punta Allen or from the Highway 307 side at Muyil, with a few freshwater spots like Kaan Luum just outside the reserve.

Why we recommend it: Sian Ka’an is a 528,000 hectare federal biosphere reserve inscribed by UNESCO in 1987 for its natural beauty and biodiversity. It spans tropical forest, mangroves, wetlands, about 120 km of coast and part of the Mesoamerican Reef, and is managed by CONANP.
Muyil and Chunyaxche Lagoons
Highway 307, Muyil · Lagoons and Maya channels
Carretera Federal 307, next to the Muyil archaeological zone, Q.R.

Carretera Tulum-Boca Paila, inside Sian Ka’an, Q.R.

Punta Allen · Marine bay and flats
Bahía de la Ascensión, Punta Allen, Sian Ka’an, Q.R.

Punta Allen Village and Waterfront

Laguna Kaan Luum
Highway 307, about 15 min south of Tulum (outside the reserve) · Lagoon with cenote
Carretera Federal 307, toward Felipe Carrillo Puerto, about 12 km from Tulum centro, Q.R.
View on map
Why we recommend it: Kaan Luum is a shallow turquoise lagoon with a deep cenote at its center, located just north of Sian Ka’an along the highway. Its shallow areas suit families, and a new on-site restaurant was opened to improve visitor services.
Parque del Jaguar
Tulum coast, about 20 min from the reserve · National park
Carretera Federal 307, Tulum, Q.R.
View on map
Why we recommend it: Parque del Jaguar is the national park on Tulum’s coast that contains the Tulum archaeological zone and the MURECO museum. Entry fees for the park apply in addition to the archaeological zone, while the museum itself is free.
