Isla Mujeres was named a Pueblo Mágico in 2015, and its cultural life centers on Mayan heritage, pirate era history and outdoor public art. The municipality has recently restored landmark sites such as Hacienda Mundaca and the Punta Sur sculpture park, and a new Casa de la Cultura is under construction after the old building closed for structural reasons. Small galleries and studios and a calendar of free festivals round out the scene.
