Whale shark tours
Open sea north and east of Holbox · Seasonal wildlife tour
Departures from licensed operators in town; tours head offshore toward Cabo Catoche
View on map
Why we recommend it: Between May 15 and September 17, CONANP permits allow small groups to snorkel alongside whale sharks, the largest fish in the world, with peak sightings usually in mid summer. The season is the island’s busiest period and a major source of local income.
Three-islands boat tour
Yalahau lagoon · Boat tour
Departures from the town docks, Holbox
View on map
Why we recommend it: The island’s classic half-day boat trip visits Isla Pájaros for birdwatching, the Yalahau freshwater spring and a beach stop at Isla Pasión or the Punta Mosquito sandbar. It runs year round and is the easiest way to see the lagoon side of the reserve.
Kitesurfing
Kite Beach (hotel strip) and Punta Mosquito · Wind sport
Kite Beach beside the hotel zone; Punta Mosquito by boat. School: Kukulkite, Avenida Pedro JoaquÃn Coldwell

Why we recommend it: Steady winds from roughly November to June and flat, shallow water make Holbox a recognized kitesurfing spot, with a beginner area near the hotel strip and an advanced area at Punta Mosquito. Certified schools on the island offer lessons and equipment.
Fly fishing for tarpon
Lagoon flats and coastal waters · Sport fishing
Shallow flats around Holbox and the Yalahau lagoon; guided trips from town
View on map
Why we recommend it: Holbox has a year-round fishery for juvenile tarpon in the shallows, and large migratory tarpon arrive from about May, peaking June to August. Local guides also run fishing charters toward Cabo Catoche.
Mangrove kayaking and paddleboarding
Lagoon side and mangrove channels · Paddle sports
Mangrove channels on the lagoon side of Holbox; guided tours from town
View on map
Why we recommend it: Calm, shallow water makes kayaking and stand-up paddleboarding easy around the island, and early morning mangrove paddles are a good way to see herons and flamingos. Several local operators rent boards and run guided outings.
Bioluminescence outings
Punta Cocos and Punta Mosquito · Night nature activity
Punta Cocos (west tip) and Punta Mosquito (east), Isla Holbox
View on map
Why we recommend it: On dark nights away from the full moon, plankton in the shallows glows blue when the water is disturbed, most intensely from June to August. Visitors go on their own to Punta Cocos or join guided kayak tours.
Cycling the island
Island wide · Cycling
Sand streets of town and the beach roads toward Punta Cocos and the hotel strip
View on map
Why we recommend it: With no cars for visitors, bicycles are one of the main ways residents get around the sand streets, and an easy ride reaches Punta Cocos for sunset. Rentals are widely available in town.
VIP Holbox Experience
Centro · Tour operator
C. Palomino x Av. Caleta, Isla Holbox, Quintana Roo 77310
Website | View on map
Why we recommend it: A long-running local operator that runs whale shark trips, mangrove kayaking, bioluminescence tours, the three-point lagoon tour, fishing and Cabo Catoche outings. It is an example of the island-based companies that handle most organized boat activities.
