Parks and Nature in Isla Mujeres

Isla Mujeres is about 7 km long, so beaches, reefs and protected areas are never more than a short golf cart ride away. The calm north shore beaches contrast with the rocky Caribbean side to the east, and the waters off the west and south coasts are part of the Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres, Punta Cancún y Punta Nizuc National Park. Isla Contoy National Park, a bird sanctuary to the north, can be visited with a limited daily permit.

Why we recommend it: Playa Norte is the island’s best known beach, with fine white sand and shallow, calm turquoise water that stays waist deep far from shore. It was listed among the top 10 beaches in Mexico in 2026 and is maintained by permanent municipal cleanup crews under the federal zone (Zofemat) authority.

Playa Sol

Playa Sol, Centro, 77400 Isla Mujeres, Q.R., Mexico

Why we recommend it: Playa Sol sits beside Playa Norte and shares the same soft sand and shallow water in a quieter setting. Its west-facing position makes it one of the most popular places on the island to watch the sunset.

Playa Centro

Downtown, near ferry dock · Public beach
Playa Centro, Centro, 77400 Isla Mujeres, Q.R., Mexico

Why we recommend it: Playa Centro is a wide stretch of sand a few steps from the main ferry dock and the downtown bus stop. It is noted for its Blue Flag certification for water quality and environmental management, making it an easy daily swim for residents who live in town.

Playa Lancheros

West coast, Sac Bajo side · Public beach
Playa Lancheros, Carretera Garrafón, 77400 Isla Mujeres, Q.R., Mexico
View on map

Why we recommend it: Playa Lancheros is a calm west coast beach facing the Bay of Mujeres and Cancún, with a traditional palapa restaurant setting. It is known for tikin xic, the Mayan style grilled fish, and offers a quieter, local alternative to the north shore.

Costa Occidental de Isla Mujeres National Park (Manchones Reef and MUSA)

Offshore, west and south coasts · Marine national park
Waters off the west and south coasts of Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: This federal marine park, created in 1996 and managed by CONANP, protects reefs such as Manchones and El Farito as well as the Manchones gallery of MUSA, the Underwater Museum of Art with more than 500 life size sculptures. Residents snorkel and dive here year round through authorized operators.

Isla Contoy National Park

About 30 km north by boat · Island bird sanctuary
Isla Contoy, Municipio de Isla Mujeres, Quintana Roo, Mexico
View on map

Why we recommend it: Isla Contoy is a protected island and Ramsar wetland that hosts large colonies of seabirds such as pelicans and frigatebirds. CONANP limits visits to 200 people per day and charges a conservation fee, which keeps the island close to its natural state.
