El Meco Archaeological Zone

Puerto Juárez to Punta Sam road · Maya archaeological site
Carretera Puerto Juárez-Punta Sam, Cancún, Q.R.
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: El Meco was a Postclassic Maya coastal settlement whose El Castillo pyramid is the tallest structure on the site. INAH reopened it in late 2024 after renovations that added a service area and a pedestrian bridge toward the shoreline; it is open daily from 8 am to 5 pm.

Museo Maya de Cancún

Hotel Zone, about 30 to 35 min · Museum
Blvd. Kukulcán Km 16.5, Zona Hotelera, Cancún, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: The INAH museum displays Maya artifacts and temporary exhibitions and connects to the San Miguelito archaeological zone next door. In 2026 it joined the monthly Noche de Museos program with evening talks.

MUSA Underwater Museum of Art

Punta Sam, Cancún and Isla Mujeres waters · Underwater sculpture museum
Galleries off Punta Sam, Punta Nizuc and Manchones (Isla Mujeres)
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: MUSA has more than 500 life-size sculptures placed on the seabed to support coral growth, including a gallery off Punta Sam. Visits are by snorkel, scuba or glass-bottom boat tours leaving from Cancún and Isla Mujeres.

Teatro de la Ciudad de Cancún

Downtown Cancún, about 25 min · Theater
Distrito Cancún, downtown Cancún, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: The city theater was built in downtown Cancún with a 662-seat main hall and a small forum for workshops and talks. It hosted the international Festival de Danzas Negras in August 2026 and a staging of Cabaret in September 2026.

Punta Sur Sculpture Park

Isla Mujeres, by ferry · Outdoor sculpture park
Punta Sur, Isla Mujeres, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: The clifftop park at the southern tip of Isla Mujeres holds 21 sculptures after four new Maya-themed works were added. It was rehabilitated by the municipality as part of a corridor with Mirador Mar Turquesa and Hacienda Mundaca.
