Shopping on Holbox is small scale: boutiques, craft shops and grocery stores cluster on the sand streets around the main square. Prices are higher than on the mainland because goods arrive by cargo ferry, so residents do larger shopping in Chiquilá, Kantunilkín or Cancún.

Why we recommend it: Most of Holbox’s shops are on the few blocks around the main square, with clothing boutiques, handmade crafts, Mexican-made apparel and small grocery stores. It is where residents run daily errands on foot or by bike.

Why we recommend it: The municipal seat on the mainland is the nearest town with a hospital (IMSS-Bienestar) and municipal offices, and offers more everyday stores than the island. Residents go there for errands, paperwork and medical care.
