Parks and Nature in Puerto Morelos

Puerto Morelos sits between a protected coral reef and a band of mangroves and jungle, so nature is part of daily life rather than a day trip. Residents swim and snorkel from town beaches, walk the trails of one of Mexico’s largest botanical gardens, and reach freshwater cenotes along the Ruta de los Cenotes in minutes.

Parque Nacional Arrecife de Puerto Morelos

Offshore, Puerto Morelos coast · Marine national park
Coastal waters off Puerto Morelos, about 500 m from shore, Puerto Morelos, Q.R. 77580
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: This federally protected marine park covers about 9,066 hectares of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef just off the town’s coast and is also a sea turtle nesting area. The reef keeps the water in front of town calm and shallow, which makes everyday swimming, snorkeling and kayaking possible close to shore.

Jardín Botánico Dr. Alfredo Barrera Marín

Highway 307, south of town · Botanical garden
Carretera Federal 307 Chetumal-Cancún, Puerto Morelos, Q.R. 77580
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: Run by the research center ECOSUR, this 65-hectare garden has jungle trails, a mangrove lookout tower, medicinal and ornamental plant collections and a small Maya structure. It hosts environmental education activities and offers a discounted entry rate for Quintana Roo residents.

Playa Ventana al Mar

Casco Antiguo (beach town) · Public beach (Blue Flag)
Parque Fundadores, Av. Rafael E. Melgar, Casco Antiguo, Puerto Morelos, Q.R. 77580
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: The main public beach next to the town square holds Blue Flag certification for water quality, safety and services. It is free to use and sits beside the fishermen’s pier and the leaning lighthouse, so it doubles as the town’s gathering point.

Playa Ojo de Agua

North end of the beach town · Beach
Ojo de Agua beach, north of the town center, Puerto Morelos, Q.R. 77580
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: This beach is named for a freshwater spring that keeps the water especially clear, and the reef is close enough for snorkeling from shore. Beach clubs along the stretch rent umbrellas and chairs and serve food.

Manglares de Puerto Morelos

Mangrove belt between beach town and highway · Protected area (flora and fauna)
Área de Protección de Flora y Fauna Manglares de Puerto Morelos, Puerto Morelos, Q.R. 77580
Website | View on map

Why we recommend it: This federal protected area safeguards the mangroves that separate the coastal town from the Colonia and protect the coast from storm surge. CONANP lists bird watching and environmental education among its activities, with access through the botanical garden.

Cenote Las Mojarras

Ruta de los Cenotes, Km 12.6 · Open cenote
Km 12.6, Ruta de los Cenotes (Puerto Morelos to Leona Vicario road), Puerto Morelos, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: Las Mojarras is a large open-air cenote with emerald water, a jumping platform, a zip line, picnic areas, bathrooms and camping. Its size and facilities make it one of the more family-friendly stops on the route.

Cenote Siete Bocas

Ruta de los Cenotes, Km 16 · Semi-open cenote
Km 16, Ruta de los Cenotes (Puerto Morelos to Leona Vicario road), Puerto Morelos, Q.R.
View on map

Why we recommend it: This cenote takes its name from the seven openings in its rock ceiling, with underwater passages that link the pools. It is used for swimming, snorkeling and cavern diving.
