Akumal itself has a handful of small grocery, craft and art shops clustered near the arch and in Akumal Pueblo. For full supermarkets, pharmacies and chain stores, residents drive 10 to 15 minutes to Puerto Aventuras or about 25 minutes to Tulum or Playa del Carmen.

Why we recommend it: Plaza Ukana is the small two-level plaza by the Akumal arch with restaurants, a café and dive and tour operators. It is the closest thing Akumal has to a town center on the beach side.
