Isla Blanca Beach
Isla Blanca, Caribbean side · Beach
Isla Blanca peninsula, Isla Mujeres municipality (continental zone), Q.R.
View on map
Why we recommend it: The Caribbean side of the peninsula is a long, lightly developed beach with calm, clear water and very few large buildings. The last stretch of the access road is packed sand, and visitors bring their own supplies because services are scarce.
Chacmochuch Lagoon State Refuge
Isla Blanca, lagoon side · Protected lagoon and mangroves
Sistema Lagunar Chacmochuch, west of the Isla Blanca peninsula, Isla Mujeres municipality, Q.R.
View on map
Why we recommend it: The shallow Chacmuchuch lagoon and its mangroves have been a state flora and fauna refuge since 1999 and are managed by the Quintana Roo biodiversity institute (Ibanqroo). A three year conservation program launched in 2025 covers signage, monitoring and outreach across more than 30,000 hectares of the coastal corridor.
Isla Contoy National Park
Off the northern tip, by boat · National park and bird sanctuary
Isla Contoy, Isla Mujeres municipality, Q.R. (about 30 km north of Isla Mujeres)
Website | View on map
Why we recommend it: This 8.75 square km island, a national park since 1998, is known as the Island of the Birds for its pelican and frigatebird colonies and is also a turtle nesting site. Visits are capped at about 200 people a day and are only possible through authorized tour operators, with a park access fee of 225 pesos in 2026.
Sea turtle nesting beaches
Costa Mujeres and Isla Blanca · Wildlife (seasonal)
Mainland beaches of Isla Mujeres municipality, Q.R.
View on map
Why we recommend it: Hawksbill, green and loggerhead turtles nest on the municipality’s mainland beaches, including Costa Mujeres and Isla Blanca, from May to October. Local committees monitor nesting sites and relocate eggs to protected areas during the season.
Playa El Niño
Puerto Juárez, about 25 min · Public beach
Carretera Puerto Juárez – Punta Sam, Puerto Juárez, Cancún, Q.R.
View on map
Why we recommend it: This public beach on the way north to Isla Blanca has gentle water, palapas and shallow areas that suit families. It is one of the closest free beaches to downtown Cancún on the Isla Mujeres side of the bay.
