Cozumel is best known for drift diving along the walls of its protected reefs, and dozens of licensed operators run daily dive and snorkel trips. The flat ring road around the island draws cyclists and hosts the bike leg of IRONMAN Cozumel, while sport fishing, golf and wind sports round out life outdoors. Residents should check CONANP’s rotating reef closures, which rest some sites for part of each year.
Each listing includes the location, a link and a map. Places change, so we review this list regularly; last reviewed October 2026.
Palancar Reef
Southwest coast · Dive site
Off the southwest coast of Cozumel, within Cozumel Reefs National Park
View on map
Why we recommend it: Palancar is a large reef system with sections known as the Horseshoe, Caves, Gardens, Shallows and Deep, at depths of roughly 15 to 34 meters. It is one of the island’s signature dives, and some sections such as Palancar Cuevas and Ladrillos are rested during seasonal closures.
Colombia Reef
South coast · Dive site
Off the south coast of Cozumel, within Cozumel Reefs National Park
View on map
Why we recommend it: Colombia is a reef complex near the southern end of the island, divided into shallow, intermediate and deep sections that suit different experience levels. CONANP rested all three sections during the August and September 2025 closure, part of its effort to keep the reefs healthy.
Paradise Reef
West coast near the cruise piers · Dive and snorkel site
Off the west coast of Cozumel south of San Miguel, within Cozumel Reefs National Park
View on map
Why we recommend it: Paradise Reef is a shallow reef close to town that is popular for snorkeling and easy dives. It is included in the park’s reef rotation system, under which sections are periodically closed so they can recover.
Island loop road cycling
Whole island · Cycling route
Carretera Costera Sur, Carretera Costera Oriente and Avenida Rafael E. Melgar loop, Cozumel, Q.R.
View on map
Why we recommend it: The coastal road that circles the island is flat, with long open stretches along the wild east coast where crosswinds make riding a real workout. It is the course for the IRONMAN Cozumel bike leg, held in November 2026, and for the GFNY Cozumel cycling event.
Sport fishing and the Cozumel International Billfish Tournament
Downtown pier and offshore · Sport fishing
Muelle Fiscal (downtown pier), Avenida Rafael E. Melgar, San Miguel de Cozumel, Q.R.
View on map
Why we recommend it: Cozumel’s offshore waters support charter fishing for billfish and other species, and the island hosts the long running Rodeo de Lanchas Mexicanas, also called the Cozumel International Billfish Tournament, held in May 2025. The public can watch weigh-ins at the downtown Muelle Fiscal pier.
Cozumel Country Club
North hotel zone · Golf course
Carretera Costera Norte KM 6.5 Interior Casa Club, Cozumel, Quintana Roo, 77600
View on map
Why we recommend it: The island’s 18-hole course was designed by Nicklaus Design, opened in 2001 and was built around mangroves and tropical forest. In 2006 it became the first course in Mexico certified as an Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary, and it offers a driving range and instruction.
North shore kiteboarding (Playa Norte and Isla de la Pasión)
North coast · Kiteboarding
North coast of Cozumel, Zona Hotelera Norte, Q.R.
View on map
Why we recommend it: Steady trade winds and warm water make the north coast, around Playa Norte and Isla de la Pasión, the island’s main kiteboarding area, especially in fall and winter. The sport was pioneered locally by Olympic windsurfer Raúl De Lille, founder of a Cozumel kiteboarding association.
